Curriculum and Advisement Guide

Marymount Manhattan College's curriculum is divided into the following four areas:
  1. CORE Curriculum Requirements (19 credits)
All students are required to complete the following courses within the CORE curriculum sequence:
FYM 101: First Year Mentoring (required for all First-Year Students) – 1 cr.
      WRIT 101: Writing Seminar I* (1st semester writing requirement) – 3 cr.
WRIT 102: Writing Seminar II (2nd semester writing requirement) – 3 cr.
MATH 113: Quantitative Reasoning* ** (fulfills Core Math requirement) – 3 cr.
COR 200: Public Speaking (to be completed after WRIT 101 & WRIT 102) – 3 cr.
COR 300: Cultural Studies I (to be completed after Public Speaking) – 6 cr.
*Enrollment in this course is based on SAT scores, placement test, transfer credits, and other criteria. First-Year students with a corresponding SAT score of 500 or higher will generally be enrolled in this course.
** Students majoring in Business, Accounting or Biology should substitute MATH 139 in place of MATH 113. Students who have already completed more advanced math courses may be permitted to register for a higher-level math course. Students with a Math SAT score below 500 will be required to take a placement test and may be enrolled in a lower-level course.

  2. SHARED Curriculum requirements (24 credits)
All students are required to complete one course from each area of the Lower Level (100/200 level) SHARED Curriculum requirements below. Typically, these lower level requirements are completed during the first academic year. In addition, prior to graduation, students will be required to complete one course from each of the 300/400 level Upper Level SHARED Curriculum requirements. These courses are drawn from five basic areas:
    1. Human Nature & Values – includes Philosophy, Psychology and Religious Studies
    2. The Natural Sciences – includes Biology, General Science and Math
    3. The Social Sciences – includes Sociology, History, Political Science, Int'l Studies, and Business
    4. Language & Literature – includes English, Speech, Spanish, and French
    5. Creative Expression – includes non-major Theatre, Dance and Art courses

  3. MAJOR Requirements (varied)
Each of the various majors requires a different number of credits. For information pertaining to a specific major, please refer to the College Catalogue (http://www.mmm.edu/study/catalog.html).

  4. ELECTIVES (varied)
The number of electives will vary according to a student's major. Since all students must complete a minimum of 120 credits to graduate, the number of electives required will depend on the number of credits required by one's major.

  5. UNDERSTANDING COURSE LISTINGS
    • Courses are listed alphabetically by department
      (see Spring 2008 Course Listings).
    • Most courses are offered in multiple sections, varying by days, times and instructors.
    • Courses are coded by a department code, a course code, and a section number. For example, in the current First-Year course listing, COMM 102 04 indicates that this is a lower-level course (100/200) given within the Communication Arts Department. The section number of 04 indicates that this is one of several sections of the same course. Generally, students may choose any section of a given course that best suits their time preference.

  6. COMPLETING THE ACADEMIC PLANNING WORKSHEET
