MMC and Me
Why did you choose
to
come to Marymount Manhattan?
I chose Marymount because of the strength of the Dance program. From
the moment I auditioned, I knew this was not just any other college. We
auditioned with our names pinned to our leotards instead of a number.
That is what makes Marymount such a special place. You are not just a
number here. This is found not only in the Dance department, but the
entire school. At Marymount you are going to be able to express
yourself in a way you may not have thought of in the past. The small
class sizes allow you to truly form relationships with your professors.
You get the feeling that they are here for your success. Marymount is a
tight knit community, which makes you feel like you have a home in this
huge city. Walking through the halls, you feel the vibe; the vibe of a
diverse group of individuals doing, practicing, training, learning and
studying what they love. Receiving a liberal arts education was really
important to me. I have become well-rounded because of the classes and
experiences I've had at Marymount. The opportunity to take courses from
a broad spectrum of studies, allowed me to explore other interests,
besides dance, that I have.
What activities do
you
participate in at MMC?
I'm not currently a member in any of our clubs on campus BUT this does
not mean I don't support my fellow peers! I've enjoyed many different
events that the clubs on campus have offered, whether it was attending
an informal poetry reading, viewing a film presented by the Psychology
Club or checking out the latest choreography performed by the Soldiers
of Hip Hop. Also, I have been employed as a student-worker in
the Office of Admission since freshman year! This means, among many
other things, I have given tours and assisted in all of our recruiting
events such as, Open House and Admitted Student Day. Recently, I
participated in a photo shoot for DanceSpirit Magazine with four fellow
Marymount dancers. We modeled new dance-wear, which was
really fun! It was so exciting to be featured in a magazine!
What has been your favorite class taken at the college? Why?
It's really hard to only pick one! A couple of classes come to mind,
but I would have to say my favorite was Intro to Criminal Justice,
taught by Michelle Ronda. I was intrigued (at times disappointed) by
our Criminal Justice System. Professor Ronda guided the class in a way
that provoked intriguing discussion for the entire class; it was never
just a lecture. Being able to express my opinions, while hearing and
understanding the views of others, was an extremely useful experience
not only for school, but also for the real world. During the course, I
had the amazing opportunity of visiting the women in Bedford Hills
Correctional Facility for Marymount's Crossing Borders conference. I
took away so much from my time there, including feeling inspired and
hopeful. It was such an eye-opening experience that I will
never forget.
Do you have a
favorite
memory from your time here so far?
Wow, there are so many memories! I have wonderful memories of working
with professional choreographers and dancers that have inspired me. But
most of all, performing on stage and being able to share my gift with
family, friends and complete strangers has been my favorite memory.
