Transfer Student Admissions
Students who have graduated from high school and have
completed college credit or are enrolled in their first semester of
college should apply as transfers. We do not require that any minimum
number of college credits be earned before a student can apply to
transfer. Students who have graduated from high school and will NOT
have any college credits completed prior to enrolling or who completed
college credits before graduating from high school should apply as freshmen.
International transfers should refer to the international
student admissions information.

TRANSFER OF CREDIT (Transfer
Student Advisement Guide)
Marymount
Manhattan College (MMC) accepts credit in transfer for coursework
completed at regionally accredited four-year colleges and universities
according to the following guidelines:
- A maximum of 90 credits will be awarded for coursework
completed with a grade of C- or higher that corresponds to the MMC
curriculum. The College cannot guarantee that all degree requirements
can be met within the remaining 30 credits.
- Departmental faculty will review requests to transfer
internships and independent study credit on a case-by-case basis. MMC
currently offers an opportunity for students to apply for prior
learning credit.
- The College does not normally award credit for courses
taken at an institution for which the student earned a grade of P
(Pass).
- The College does not award credit for remedial courses.
- All College-level English Composition courses (grade B or
higher) will be listed as equivalent to MMC's WRIT 101 and/or WRIT 102
courses. All college-level English Composition courses (below grade of
B) will be listed as Open Electives. Transfer students are referred to
placement policies for appropriate writing courses as determined by the
Center for Academic Advancement.
- All College-level math courses (grade B or higher) will be
listed as equivalent MMC courses. All college-level math courses (below
grade of B) will be listed as Math Electives. Transfer students are
referred to placement policies for appropriate math courses as
determined by the Math Department.
Marymount Manhattan
College typically awards a maximum of 60 credits in transfer for
coursework completed at regionally accredited two-year colleges; in
unusual cases, the awarding of additional credits may be considered.
The following guidelines apply:
- The College grants credit for those liberal arts courses,
taken in A.A., A.S., A.A.S. and A.O.S. degree programs, in which a
grade of C- or better was achieved, provided that those courses
correspond to the MMC curriculum.
- Credit at the 300 level is most likely to be given for
technical and specialized courses such as accounting, mathematics and
video production.
The following
requirements apply to all transfer students:
- A student must complete 120 credits to graduate, and at
least 30 of these credits must be completed at Marymount Manhattan
College. These will not include credit for internships, independent
study, or prior learning experience.
- All transfer students must complete a minimum of 12 credits
in their major at Marymount Manhattan College, regardless of the number
of transfer credits awarded within the major.
- All transfer students must complete all Core and
distribution requirements as outlined in the Core and Shared
Curriculum, even if in doing so the total number of credits exceeds the
120 credits required for a Marymount Manhattan College degree. Transfer
credits may be directly applicable to these requirements.
- Students must complete a minimum of 60 credits at MMC to be
eligible for academic honors at Commencement.
The following
guidelines govern the acceptance of transfer credit from institutions
other than regionally accredited colleges and universities:
Non-Collegiate
Sponsored Instruction
- Students may have completed college-level courses offered
by the military, business, industry, government, labor unions or police
academies for which no college credit was earned. The College will
recognize and grant credit, as appropriate, for courses that have been
evaluated by the American Council on Education, the Office of
Educational Credit, or the New York State Education Department's Office
on Non-Collegiate Sponsored Instruction. Non-evaluated coursework may
also be submitted for review through the Prior Learning process.
Advanced Placement Credit
- High school seniors and traditional transfer students who
have taken Advanced Placement examinations administered by the College
Entrance Examination Board, will be awarded credit in accordance with
College policy. 6 elective credits are granted for the English Language
& Composition exam (score 4 or 5). 3 credits of electives and 3
credits of ENG 180 - Narrative Fiction - are granted for the English
Literature & Composition exam. The student must have the
official score sheet sent to MMC. Eligibility will be determined and
credit awarded to the student upon enrollment in the College. Such
credit will not exceed a maximum of 30 credits and will not count
toward the thirty-credit residency requirement. Waiver of requirements
in any given subject area will be at the discretion of the Divisional
faculty.
International Baccalaureate
- Transfer credit is granted for IB examination scores of 4
or higher on the Higher Level Examinations. No credit is granted for
the Standard Level Examinations.
Foreign Language Credit
- Students who are fluent in a foreign language but whose
instruction in that language did not take place in a formal classroom
setting, may have their skills and fluency in the language evaluated
for possible transfer credit by taking either the CLEP exam or the NYU
Language Proficiency exam. Official scores earned must be sent to
Marymount Manhattan College. Students may earn up to 12 credits for
language proficiency, but these credits may not be applied at the 300
Level or above.
Life Experience Credit
NOTE: Marymount Manhattan College is the final arbiter of
transferability of credit.
