Friday, October 17, 2008
8:00am – 5:30pm Parents are free to attend class with their son or daughter, unless otherwise indicated by the professor.
8:00am – 10:30am - Dance Department Parents’ Reception Join the Dance Department for a continental breakfast before classes begin. Parents are encouraged to attend their student’s classes for the day. See what they’ve been learning.
10:00am – 11:00am - Faculty Presentation: A Place for the Visual Arts in a Liberal Arts College 8th Floor Professor Millie Burns will present and discuss a multimedia review of the work of Gordon Parks - an iconic American visual arts legend, followed by a guided tour of the college's gallery spaces and a discussion of some of the works currently on exhibition.
1:00pm – 2:00pm - Faculty Presentation: The Nature & Effects of Interdisciplinary Instruction in the Higher Education Environment 8th Floor Professor Cory Liberman will introduce students and parents to the idea of interdisciplinarity within the college setting, and discuss how this perspective may enhance the quality of our liberal arts education.
3:00pm – 4:00pm - Faculty Panel Discussion: Greening of the Curriculum Panel Discussion with Professor Kelsey Jordahl, Professor Carrie-Ann Biondi, Professor Alessandra Leri, Professor Rebecca Mushtare and Professor Millie Burns. As a contribution to the college's celebration of the Year of the Environment, these faculty members will discuss the introduction of an environmental studies minor and the overall relevance of environmental issues throughout the MMC curriculum.
4:00pm - 5:30pm - Dialogues in Dance History of the Hip-Hop Dance Culture (co-hosted by Soldiers of Hip-Hop). Special guest Rennie Harris, choreographer and Artistic Director of Rennie Harris Puremovement, Philadelphia, PA will join us for as we explore the history and influences that make up the hip-hop culture. All are welcome to attend.
6:00pm – 7:45pm - Career and Internship Panel/Networking Social MMC Alumni include Board Chair, Anne Flannery, Esq. Panel members will discuss their career and job opportunities in today’s economic environment. Students, parents and alumni are welcome. This interactive panel features several MMC alumni and one student intern. Students, parents and alumni are then welcome to spend time together sharing their MMC experiences.
8:00pm – 10:00pm - Homecoming Extravaganza: MMC’s Got Talent Enjoy the first-ever competitive faculty/staff talent show! Performances will also include Poptards and other students! There will be food, door prizes, and the final chance to vote for King and Queen!
8:00pm – 10:00pm - Theater Production: Major Barbara MMC Theatre Production Workshop presents Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw. An intellectually engaging comedy with spirited debate about religion, capitalism, class, gender equality, power, and warfare, Major Barbara is one of Shaw’s most forward-thinking plays. This production is performed by students in the Theatre Arts programs of the College. Performances are scheduled for Friday, October 17th at 8 pm, Saturday, October 18th at 8pm, and Sunday, October 19th at 2pm. 10:00am – 11:00am - Check In & Welcome Reception Representatives from Academic Advisement, Admission, and Student Affairs will be on hand to welcome you. Mix and mingle with members of the MMC community, and get to know other MMC parents.
10:00am – 2:00pm - MMC School Store Open Take advantage of this opportunity to get all of the MMC paraphernalia that you want. There will also be some new items revealed just for you.
10:15am – 10:45am - What is our Bedford Hills College Program (BHCP)? Executive Director for Academic Achievement Cindy Mercer, will present a video of MMC’s special program at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.
10:45am – 11:45pm - Meet our Administrators Meet Vice Presidents Michael Cappeto, David Podell, and Betty Heinig who will update you on student life, academic affairs, and the comprehensive capital campaign.
12:00pm – 1:00pm - First Year Parents’ Reception Parents of first year students are invited to join members of MMC staff for an informal luncheon. Learn about important upcoming events and the ways in which you can effectively aid your student in his/her journey toward success - all this while enjoying a delicious lunch!
12:00pm – 1:00pm - Alumni/Parent Reception A time for alumni to reconnect with college friends and reminisce about their time at MMC. We encourage parents to join us to enjoy our spectacular new terrace and water wall.
12:00pm – 1:00pm - Honors Reception (Invitation Only) Remarks by our President, Judson R. Shaver, Ph.D.
1:15pm - Buses Depart for Roosevelt Island Be sure to sign up for the bus at our reception desk. Space on the bus is limited.
2:00pm – 5:00pm - MMC Pep Rally and Flag Football Game Join in all the fun with MMC’s student groups! Lots of activities to enjoy: Student Government Association’s (SGA) Pie Eating Contest; Student Political Association’s (SPA) Pin the Tail on the Donkey/Elephant: Go Green Coalition’s Recycling Relay; DJ Commentary from The Griffin Radio; The MMC Psychology Club’s Chocolate Fountain; Crazy Carnival by the Campus Activities Board (CAB).
Then it’s the annual Flag Football game sponsored by Campus Activities Board! Cheer for the Griffins, undefeated since 1961. Halftime show sponsored and performed by Soldiers of Hip Hop.
6:00pm – 8:00pm - Wall-to-Wall Musical Theatre The Wall to Wall is a cabaret night with songs from musicals that follow a theme. This Wall to Wall will be a night filled with performances of songs from the many musicals that Cameron Mackintosh produced. Cameron Mackintosh was the producer behind many of the mega-musicals (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, etc).

8:00pm – 10:00pm - Movie Night: Sex in the City Stop by and join us for an evening of free entertainment as the Office of Student Activities showcases the Marymount Manhattan College premiere of Sex and the City.

8:30am – 12:00pm - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Join us in the fight against breast cancer by participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Central Park! Meet for the walk at our 71st Street Entrance.
11:00am – 1:00pm - Academic Access Program Parents Workshop (Invitation Only)
12:00pm – 1:00pm - Interfaith Service MMC Chapel An interfaith service of song, story, and prayer with students, Rabbi Hiat, guests, and Rebecca Buchanan, PhD, Director of Campus Ministries. Take some time and join us.
1:00pm – 2:00pm- Sunday Lunch Café 4th and Main We hope you enjoyed your time at Marymount Manhattan. Grab a bite to eat before you head back home. Students, their parents and alumni are welcome.
