INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
In counseling you work collaboratively with a trained professional to define and understand problems and work toward solutions. Everyone's experience is different, but some of the things you can expect are that your counselor will:
- Listen without criticism or judgment
- Keep what you say private and confidential
- Help you gain perspective on your problems
- Help you identify goals and work toward accomplishing them
Many students report that the decision to speak to a counselor is not easy. You may think your problems aren't important enough, or are too great and no one can help. You may wonder how just talking can make a difference, or think it's better to handle problems on your own—going to a counselor is being weak. You may believe only crazy people go to counseling. There are many reasons students hesitate about counseling.
In reality, talking to a counselor when you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed is a sign of maturity and good judgment, not of weakness or being "crazy." If a problem seems to be too much to handle, then it's wise to speak to a counselor. No matter how overwhelmed or hopeless you feel, counseling can help.
Some students find one or two sessions are enough to restore perspective and get moving again. Other students benefit from a series of sessions. CWC will help you evaluate your problems and decide if you should be seen for short-term counseling on-campus. If you need long-term therapy in the community, CWC will give you referral suggestions.
CONSULTATION
CWC offers consultation services for students, staff, and faculty who might want to discuss helping a student who is struggling with a personal concern. Consultation appointments can be made by calling CWC and scheduling a meeting with a counselor or by coming to the daily walk-in hours listed on this webpage.
PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATIONS FOR MEDICATION
While most personal and psychological problems respond to counseling alone, some students also need the assistance of medication. CWC has a psychiatrist available to evaluate students who may need medication and to monitor medication treatment. In general, students who see the CWC psychiatrist are also seen for individual counseling at CWC.
Appointments with the psychiatrist are free of charge. The cost of medications depends on the particular medication prescribed and your health insurance coverage. The CWC psychiatrist does not provide emergency supplies of medication.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS
CWC sponsors many programs to enhance students' health and wellbeing, including Stress-down Day, Flu Clinic, Alcohol Screening Day, and Healthy Eating. Please see the link on this page for Upcoming Programs.
WORKSHOPS
CWC sponsors workshops and can present workshops to classes or other groups. Topics include Stress Management and Relaxation, Body Image, Time Management, and Sweet Dreams (good sleep habits).
Please look for our offering of workshops and programs on our bulletin boards (outside CWC's 8th floor office, Nugent Lounge & fourth floor), or call 212-774-0700 for more information.
