REVISED CURRENT STUDENTS PAGE: Bringing MMC Together

In the age of YouTube, Myspace, and Facebook, college students demand information at their fingertips, anything less is not worth their time. In this era of click and go attitudes, Marymount Manhattan College’s website has become a relic of early 21st century design, as outdated as the original iPod in an iPhone world. Students not only have to bear with the outdated gaudy and sterile aesthetics of the site, but also the hard to navigate jumbled labyrinth that is www.mmm.edu. In short the MMC website is not only a joke, but also an insult to the tech savvy student, an obvious indicator of this college’s care and attention towards the student body’s needs. This Fall in conjunction with the department of Information Technology, the Student Government Association has worked to redevelop the Current Students page of the Marymount Manhattan College website.
The purpose of such an endeavor is to create a temporary student portal that is suited to the needs of the students while a more permanent coherent solution is found. The Student Government Association is proud to announce that the first step in this long process has been accomplished. Today students can access the current students page by simply typing http://www.mmm.edu/current in their browser’s address bar. The new layout is designed to combine all the Internet links pertinent to students in one page and create an easy to navigated pleasing site. The links are categorized, so similar content is next to each other and easy to find. Additionally the most used and important links for students (Email, Blackboard, and MMC-Connect) are listed at the top for ease of access.
The page also includes a section with all the events and activities of the week that is funneled directly from the “In The News” and “What’s Happening” emails. The purpose of including this section is so students can quickly peruse through important news without having to check their emails. Ultimately SGA hopes that this will reduce the mass emails at the college, which is a concern to the entire student body.
The page can be update live so that any necessary changes can be made as soon as possible. The site is still in progress and will continue to change throughout the year. Eventually the goal will be to make that the homepage of all the computers accessible to students at the college. “We want to make getting access to information as painless and thought free as possible,” comments Student Government Public Relations Secretary Andres Garcia, “there isn’t anything that shouldn’t be available to the students within one click. Hopefully this will be the beginning of many changes to come to MMC’s website.” |
