Department of Theatre Arts

For a student of theatre, New York City is the place to be!

Why Theatre at MMC?

The Theatre Arts Programs at MMC offer professional theatre education and training combined with a liberal arts education. It is our philosophy that the more well-rounded the education of theatre students, the better prepared they are to create and produce compelling and imaginative theatre. Individualized attention and a strong faculty advisement program enable qualified students to take on substantial projects and roles.

Independent study projects provide opportunities for specialized training and performance experience. Junior and senior level students may also study abroad for credit at schools such as the British American Drama Academy in London and Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy. Internships in a variety of settings (Broadway, Off- and Off-Off-Broadway, television, film, and dance) allow students to develop experience and a potential network in the NYC performing arts community.

We believe in training individual creative artists and encourage our students to explore all that the College and NYC have to offer. Co-curricular minors in Arts for Communities, Music, and Arts ManagementDrama TherapyFashion Studies, and Music can complement the BFA majors in Acting, Musical Theatre, Design and Technical Production, and Stage Production and Management, and the BA majors in Theatre Arts.

Performance opportunities include mainstage and studio productions such as The Balcony, Parade, Love and Information, Bring It On, Spring Awakening (play), Blues for Mister Charlie, Electra, On Strivers Row, Machinal, The Laramie Project, Starlight Express, An Enemy of the People, and Ragtime. The MMC Directing Projects are performed in the Bordeau Box Theatre each semester. These short, contemporary plays are directed by students in the Directing III class, designed and stage managed by students, and cast with student actors. MMC Playwriting Projects provide student playwrights with an opportunity to hear and see their works-in-progress.

Through our Professional Preparation courses in acting and musical theatre, students present audition material in Senior Showcases for select panels of agents and casting directors through which they receive individual personal guidance and advice for starting their professional careers.

MMC Theatre Arts programs are unique in offering specialized opportunities to the qualified student. Theatre faculty teach students through flexible programs in which intensive production experience can be gained. MMC Theatre Arts graduates leave with viable, competitive portfolios. They have made successful careers in theatre, film, and television, and have been accepted into highly competitive graduate programs.

Commitment to Equity and Transformative Justice

The Theatre Arts Department is committed to creating a culture and curriculum that are ethical and equitable. Theatre Arts faculty and staff pledge to develop and implement recruitment strategies, curriculum, pedagogy, and theatre production practices that are anti-racist, anti-sexist, gender, body, ability, national origin, and LGBTQIA+ inclusive. They will also engage and collaborate with students to eradicate biased structures. This departmental work is grounded in a commitment to Transformative Justice.

Transformative Justice is a collection of methods designed to give communities—in our case, classroom, studio, production, and department communities—autonomy over social systems. Theatre Arts faculty implement these practices in Theatre Arts courses and productions as a way to build community. The hope is that these practices will help us to create new ways to listen, question, and respond to conflict/disagreement when it arises.

Meet our Alumni

  • Annaleigh Ashford ’05

Class of 2005, BFA in Acting and Musical Theatre
Tony Award winner, Best Featured Actress in a Play, You Can’t Take it With You

I always knew that my opportunity to become a better artist would start with living in New York City. I could further my education as a performer with all the best resources at my fingertips. Marymount Manhattan College and New York City were a perfect match for me.

  • Nadia Brown ’17

Class of 2017, BFA in Acting

Thanks to Marymount’s BFA Acting program, I have become a disciplined, well-versed actor and a well-rounded human being. I particularly attribute this to the integration of my liberal arts education. I have carried all of the vocal, movement, and acting techniques I learned in school with me into the professional world, and needless to say, I would not be where I am today without the help of all of my glorious teachers paving the way!

  • Aaron Glick ’06

Class of 2006, BA in Theatre Arts

I moved to New York wanting to be an actor. MMC helped me realize that there were other careers in the theater. If not for the flexibility of MMC’s liberal arts programs, I would not have been able to make the transition from in front of to behind the curtain so easily or fruitfully.

  • Emmy Raver-Lampman ’12

Class of 2012, BA Theatre Performance and Musical Theatre

Marymount Manhattan College allowed me to create the exact college experience I wanted! The wide variety of classes, the wonderful professors, and the convenience of being in New York City all helped me explore many different aspects of theatre arts. I got real-life experience in the city during my years in school. That was the most valuable part of my time at Marymount Manhattan.

  • Adrienne Warren ’09

Class of 2009, Theatre Performance major and Musical Theatre minor

Marymount Manhattan is where I learned to run a light board, help build a set, and assist in hanging lights. As an actor, I believe it is important to have an appreciation for every aspect of what goes into making a complete piece of theatre. Now I joke with the crew of shows I work on and say…’I know how to do that!’

  • James Cusati-Moyer ’11

Class of 2011, BFA in Acting

“MMC, with its strong liberal arts foundation and passionate faculty, provided me with the opportunity to grow…as an artist and as a human being…opening my eyes to imagine my future…with curiosity, hope and a viewpoint of limitless possibilities.”

James Cusati-Moyer ’11 (Broadway: Slave Play and Six Degrees of Separation. Off-Broadway: Fire and Air, at Classic Stage Company; Regional: Portland Stage Company and Williamstown Theatre Festival; M.F.A. Yale School of Drama)

  • Matthew Rodrigues ’04

Class of 2004, BFA in Acting major

“Studying theatre helped me to discover and explore all the different parts of my personality and gave me confidence to make bold choices. The actor in me loves to bring a lot of energy, physicality, and humor to my hosting work.”

Matthew Rodriguez ’04 (A longtime staple of the Hollywood entertainment scene as anchor of the celebrity and lifestyle TV program POPSUGAR and as a live broadcast reporter from the Academy Awards. He’s worked with leading names in the industry such as Hilton, Cirque du Soleil, CBS’s The Talk, Wanderlust, ABC’s The View and FOX.)

  • Laura Wood ’05

After earning a BA in Theatre Arts at MMC, Laura Wood ’05 went on to earn a master’s in Drama Therapy at New York University and a Ph.D. in Counseling from the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
