Suggested Monologues

Students auditioning for the BFA in Acting and/or the Theatre Performance concentration in the BA in Theatre Arts must audition with one 2-minute contemporary monologue (written after 1945).

Audition material must be selected from published plays; please do not audition with original material. Choose a monologue that you connect with personally and that best demonstrates your acting abilities.

Please do not prepare monologues that are caricature, extremely broad comedy, require an accent, or that are not from a play or film. If you need assistance in finding a monologue, please consult the lists of suggested monologues below. At the bottom is a list of monologues to avoid.*

Her designs have been seen all over New York City and the country and her work was nominated for a Henry Hewes Design Award for The Debate Society’s Buddy Cop 2. She has an M.F.A. degree from New York University’s Tisch Department of Design for Stage and Film and a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College. Professor Maresca has worked with students both as an educator and as a designer at a number of universities including Pace, Princeton, Sarah Lawrence, Western Connecticut State University, Juilliard, and the Curtis Institute.</div>

He has worked as an actor, director, and dramaturge throughout the United States and Europe. His translations of Euripides’ “Bacchae” and Lessing’s “Nathan the Wise” have received successful performances as have several of his adaptations. He was seen Off Broadway as Polonius in two different stagings of “The Heart of My Mystery: The Hamlet Project”, an adaptation which he co-authored. His one- play fusion of Shakespeare’ s “Henry IV Parts I and II” was produced at the Shakespearean Theatre of Maine, a production in which he also played Falstaff. He has worked professionally on productions of half of Shakespeare’s plays.</div>

She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and her interdisciplinary interests have inspired performance and research activities, including her book, Embodied Texts: Symbolist Playwright-Dancer Collaborations. She received the MMC Teaching Excellence Award in 2005.</div>

John has taught Shakespeare and acting at Rutgers University, C.W. Post Long Island University, Penn State University, Asolo Conservatory, Bradley University, University of Colorado, University of Wyoming, and Columbia Teachers College. In addition he has taught Shakespeare workshops at the high school level and for the NYC Arts Connection’s outreach program, Children of Hope. He has directed for the American Globe Theatre, Riverside Shakespeare Company, Ensemble Studio Theatre and the Sarasota Opera, in addition to guest artist positions at several universities. John is the author of Will Power, How to Act Shakespeare in 21 Days (Applause, 2006).</div>

She is enthusiastic about introducing students to a contextualized history of performance and helping them to explore how theatre participates in larger political, social, and cultural economies. She regularly teaches seminars in the General Education Curriculum on topics such as “Medievalisms” and “The Ethics of Performance Reenactment,” and has taught in both the first-year Writing Seminar program and the College Honors Program. Jill also mentors the student dramaturgs who work on MMC’s mainstage theatre productions.</div>

MMC stage directing credits include Bogosian’s suburbia, Garcia Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, The Seagull by Chekhov, Miller’s The Crucible, Paul Green and Richard Wright’s Native Son: The Biography of a Young American (an adaptation of Wright’s novel), John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath adapted by Frank Galati, George Bernard Shaw’s Major Barbara, Sam Shepard’s Geography of a Horse Dreamer, Lynn Nottage’s Ruined, Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman’s Stage Door, and Shakespeare’s Pericles. Professor Mold served as the first elected vice president of the College’s Faculty Council from 2007-2010. He is also active in higher education as a consultant in program review for fine and performing arts departments, completing such reviews for Iona College and York College, CUNY.</div>
