Donating Scholarships and Grants
Many of the most talented and promising students depend on financial assistance to cover the expenses associated with obtaining a college degree. Tuition is on the rise across the country, while government and private support is, in many cases, decreasing. Though MMC works hard to keep its tuition low - especially as compared to other private institutions of higher education in New York City - more than 70 percent of the College's students still require some financial support. Without the support of scholarships, it would be impossible for MMC to continue its mission of providing a first-rate liberal arts education to a diverse and thriving population.
Endowed Scholarships
An endowed scholarship provides support to deserving students year after year. The principal amount of the scholarship fund is invested; each year a percentage of the principal and accumulated income as calculated by the College's controller (currently 4%) is awarded to eligible students.
A donor has the opportunity to name a scholarship in honor of a relative, friend or member of the Marymount Manhattan community with a gift of $25,000 or more. A $100,000 gift fully endows a scholarship, giving the donor the option of establishing award criteria, such as restricting the scholarship to biology majors or students from New York City.
Many donors choose to build their scholarship funds to full endowment by donating an immediate gift of $5,000 or more and pledging to contribute more in the future through additional gifts or bequests.
Grants
Grants offer another method of contributing to scholarship at MMC. These gifts of $5,000 to $24,999 are typically awarded in their entirety at one time, and do not grow in value the way endowed scholarships do.
