“Marymount Muscle” Community Service at MMC

MMC is pleased to launch “Marymount Muscle”, the newly revamped community service program. The objective of Marymount Muscle is to provide students with engaging and meaningful service opportunities throughout New York City.

“Marymount Muscle,” is Marymount Manhattan College’s revamped community service program that will provide opportunities for students to volunteer at various community based organizations located throughout New York City.  The primary objective of Marymount Muscle is to provide meaningful and engaging service related opportunities for all students.  In collaboration with New York Cares, and as a component of New Student Orientation, the College launched the program and registered over 200 freshmen and transfer students as New York Cares volunteers. In addition to New York Cares, students will also have opportunities to get involved with other organizations that serve under-resourced neighborhoods in New York City.

“We already have a critical mass of new students who are ready to be deployed for community service related opportunities,” said Zakkiyya Taylor, Coordinator for Student Engagement and Community Service for Marymount.  “We have a rich history of engaging students in service to the community.  This helps us continue that tradition in very strong numbers.”

First year students have already started to flex their “Marymount Muscle.”  During Orientation week, they helped distribute over 14,000 pounds of fresh produce with the City Harvest Mobile Market and sorted food donations at the Food Bank of New York.  Taylor said, “Whether our students are local or new to NYC, engaging in community service provides a unique opportunity to learn about what life is like for many New Yorkers.  It also provides insight on how issues of social justice, equality and access to education play out on a local level.”

Every student who participates in community service will receive a Marymount Muscle t-shirt.  This black and hot pink muscle tee is already in high demand at the College. “We want our students to wear their Marymount Muscle tees proudly,” says Taylor.

Many additional community service opportunities will be available for students this year. Be sure to visit the  community service page for the updated list of opportunities both on and off campus. Whether volunteering on the Marymount Muscle team with President Walk during Inauguration Week, serving a hot Thanksgiving meal, or participating in this year’s Alternative Spring Break Program, we are sure that our Marymount Muscle will be put to work!
