Marymount Manhattan Celebrates 75 Years at Trustee Donor Dinner

New York, N.Y.—On December 6, 2011, President Judson R. Shaver, Ph.D., hosted Marymount Manhattan College’s most generous and steadfast donors at The Lotos Club in Manhattan for a celebratory dinner marking the College’s 75th anniversary. Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, decreed December 6 as “Marymount Manhattan College Day” in a proclamation read by MMC’s Board of Trustees Chairman James E. Buckman.

Three of the four living former MMC presidents attended the celebration, including Sister Colette Mahoney, RSHM; Regina Peruggi, Ph.D.; and Maureen Grant, Ph.D. Associate to the President for Operations Melissa Richman served as the emcee for the evening. Guests were also treated to a musical performance by MMC alumnus Robert Torres ’11 and current MMC student Austen Boone ’12.

Mayor Bloomberg’s proclamation honoring the College’s three quarters of a century service to the citizens of the City of New York read as follows:

Whereas: Our city continues to invest in our future, New Yorkers recognize that our economic vitality and prosperity depend on the quality of our educational institutions. For 75 years, Marymount Manhattan College has served a diverse student body, preparing learners to succeed in our competitive economy and providing them with the training and connections they need to begin fulfilling careers. That is why we are proud to join Marymount Manhattan’s students, alumni, faculty and administration in celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Whereas: A liberal arts college with a rich history in one of the world’s most vibrant cities, Marymount Manhattan is a tremendous resource to its students. Founded in 1936 as a two-year women’s college, it moved to East 71st Street in 1948 and became a four-year college. It was granted an independent charter in 1961, and today, more than 2,000 undergraduates from 36 countries benefit from its interdisciplinary approach to study programs ranging from business management to the arts to my personal favorite, the sciences.
Whereas: Marymount Manhattan’s commitment to excellence goes beyond its classrooms and labs, as its teachers encourage students to think critically, solve problems, and apply their experiences to internships and research and career opportunities. Its graduates are prepared not only to join the workforce, but to lead in the emerging fields that make the world’s most talented professionals and dynamic companies regard our great city as the place to be. Together, we are committed to building an even smarter and stronger New York, and as we celebrate this 75th anniversary, we look forward to Marymount Manhattan continuing to set the pace for urban liberal arts colleges in the years ahead. Now therefore, I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, in recognition of this outstanding institution, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, December 6th, 2011, in the City of New York as “Marymount Manhattan College Day.”

Marymount Manhattan College is an urban, independent, liberal arts college. The mission of the College is to educate a socially and economically diverse student body by fostering intellectual achievement and personal growth and by providing opportunities for career development.
