MMC Graduates Take Center Stage at 61st Commencement

New York, N.Y.—On May 21, 2010, proud parents and members of the Marymount Manhattan community watched as more than 200 graduates walked across the stage at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, during MMC’s 61st Commencement. Prior to commencement, graduates participated in the College’s baccalaureate ceremony at The Church of St. Paul the Apostle. The total number of graduates for the 2009-2010 academic year was 339.

At the baccalaureate, the College presented this year’s graduates with their hoods, which were worn at commencement. Associate Professor of International Studies Ghassan Shabaneh, Ph.D., recipient of the 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award, addressed the graduates and student achievement awards were presented. 

MMC’s commencement featured the traditional procession of faculty, administrators and graduates. The ceremony was led by David Podell, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. Remarks were made by President Judson R. Shaver, Ph.D., and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Louis A. Martarano. Trustee Sr. Rita Arthur delivered the invocation and Rabbi Phillip Hiat presented the benediction. 

Valedictorian Ming Yan Angela Poh ’10, a philosophy and religious studies major, and senior class speaker Zachary Harrell ’10, a theatre major, also addressed their fellow classmates with remarks that encouraged reflection and a look ahead to the future. 

The Class of 2010 wore environmentally friendly GreenWeaver™ attire from Oak Hall Cap & Gown. Made from 100 percent post-consumer plastic bottles, each GreenWeaver™ gown prevents approximately 23 bottles from being deposited in a landfill. 

Marymount Manhattan College presented an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to U.S. historian Dr. John Hope Franklin (posthumously) and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to art historian Dr. Barbara Novak. Dr. Franklin’s degree was accepted by his son, John Whittington Franklin.
