Families and Friends Celebrate MMC Homecoming 2009

(New York, NY) – The weekend rainfall did not discourage families and friends from enjoying Homecoming 2009 at Marymount Manhattan College.

MMC’s Homecoming (Oct. 23-25) offered guests an opportunity to get a taste of the MMC experience, by attending class presentations by students and faculty members in all five divisions. Among these presentations was a ballet technique class by Anthony Ferro, M.F.A., Associate Professor of Dance, which offered guests an opportunity to learn how MMC dancers prepare and study the art of ballet.

Another session featured Rebecca Mushtare, M.F.A., Assistant Professor of Communications Arts; Nancy Lushington, B.A., Dance Department Artist-in-Residence; and Robert Dutiel, M.F.A., Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts who presented “Dialogues on Dance: Spatial Dialogue,” a multimedia project that examines the intersection between new media, choreography and set design and the impact of space on physicality and movement and its representation through technology.

A discussion of the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, written by Michael Pollan, was presented by Katie LeBesco, Ph.D., Chair of Communications Arts, and Peter Naccarato, Ph.D., Chair of Humanities. The discussion focused on the College’s shared summer reading and Learning Communities Program.

Families and Friends enjoyed a hearty meal during Friday’s reception in The Commons.

MMC’s Student Government Association (SGA) held an office decorating contest to start off the three-day event. Many offices got into the spirit by decorating either in a Halloween or an MMC Homecoming theme. The winners were: Office of Academic Advisement (Best Office), Office of Institutional Advancement (Runner-Up), Office of Admissions (Most Economical) and Office of Student Affairs/Residence Life (Best Use of Theme).

Throughout the weekend, various receptions were hosted including MMC’s Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) Parent Reception, the Honors Reception, Family and Friends Reception, the International Students Reception and the MMC Alumni Reception.

The MMC community, friends and families enjoyed a pep rally and flag football game at Roosevelt Island. The pep rally featured the second annual pie eating contest and the crowning of the Homecoming Court: Kat Barnes ’10 (queen), Zach Harrell ’10 (king), Madalyn Mattsey ’11 (princess), Josh Hashmi ’11 (prince), Gabby Wright ’12 (dutchess), Barry Nelson ’12 (duke), Rich Cortes ’13 (lord), and Zaidat Animashuan ’13 (lady).

The MMC Theatre Production Workshop presented Girl Gone by Mac Wellman, in The Theresa Lang Theatre. Other special performances included “MMC’s Got Talent,” sponsored by SGA and “Wall-to-Wall Musical Theatre,” which featured some of MMC’s Fine and Performing Arts students.
