Honored Undergrad Took 38 Years to Graduate

It took Carol Berman 38 years to graduate from college. Through financial challenges, a teenage marriage, single parenthood at 23, a breast cancer battle and a double mastectomy last year, Carol graduated Friday, May 24, 2013, from Marymount Manhattan College with a BA in psychology. There’s no surprise that she was awarded the College’s Rowley Founder’s Medal for overcoming adversity to attain educational achievement. Did we mention her GPA is 3.945?

Not once did she give up over what were almost insurmountable odds and awed people with her unremittingly positive outlook, energy and determination. Professionally, she was also well-respected – she was hired to be a Vice President at Citibank without even an Associate’s Degree to her name. While she’s 64 years old and has children in their 40s, her 21-year-old classmates consider her one of their own
