Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Expands Offerings

Additions Include Sequence of Courses for Second Career Students, A New Minor, and the Development of a Master’s Program

The encouraging forecasts for careers in speech-language pathology and audiology have drawn many college graduates who are currently employed in other professions to seek new occupations in these helping professions. These post baccalaureate students cite their desire to be engaged in work that benefits society as a motivation for changing their career direction. Predictions of areas for future job growth often cite speech pathology and audiology as professions that will be in demand.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Marymount Manhattan College has responded to the needs of working students who are preparing for graduate school by developing a concentrated sequence of courses offered in the evenings. The sequence courses fulfill the foundational requirements of graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology. In addition to their evening schedule, the courses are scheduled throughout the year, including summer, enabling students to complete their preparation in one year.

This program is in addition to the vibrant undergraduate major and minor in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The Department has also recently introduced an exciting new minor, Language Sciences, which prepares students for many potential linguistic-based career paths including Forensic Linguistics and TESOL. The minor explores human language as a system, as a social tool and artifact, as well as exploring its cognitive and neurological underpinnings. Further, the Department is developing a master’s program in Speech-Language Pathology to meet the growing demand of students who want to pursue this meaningful career.

Incoming or current students who would like more information about the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology programs should contact Dr. Ann Jablon (ajablon@mmm.edu). Please contact Troy Cogburn (tcogburn@mmm.edu) for admissions information for the prerequisite sequence.
