Marymount Manhattan College is proud to present The Jack and Lewis Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Lecture at 6:30 p.m., March 17, in The Theresa Lang Theatre. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Richard West Sellars, retired National Park Service Historian, noted author and Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow. His lecture is titled, “America’s National Parks and the Rise of an Environmental Ethic.”

MMC Students, Campus Community Witness Presidential Inauguration

(New York, NY) On January 20, 2009, about 60 members of the MMC community gathered in the Nugent Lounge to watch the Presidential Inauguration. As the College watched the broadcast, two Marymount Manhattan College students were in the crowd that witnessed it firsthand. President and vice-president of MMC’s Student Political Association Holly Dougherty ’09 and Farah Minwalla ’11 observed President Barack Obama’s inauguration amid a crowd of nearly two million people in the span between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument.

(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan’s This is the Day Web site, designed for the $25 million fundraising campaign initiative, was awarded a Silver 2009 CASE II Accolades Award in the division of Web Site: Fundraising Development. MMC’s site was competing alongside colleges and universities in the CASE District II division, the largest of the eight CASE districts. 

Facebook Connects MMC Alumni

(New York, NY) Originally constructed as a networking tool for students attending colleges and universities, Facebook is the popular, free-accessing networking Web site that has grown to include members based on city, workplace, school and region. Marymount Manhattan’s Office of Alumni Relations, like so many other alumni associations, is finding Facebook to be an advantageous tool to engage young alumni and keep them interconnected with the College and each other.

(New York, NY) December 12, 2008 was a celebration of the life of Theresa Lang ’97, HD ’08 at Marymount Manhattan College. Friends, family and members of the MMC Community gathered for a heart-warming memorial service in the Theresa Lang Theater.

MMC Alumna Leads Mosaic Preparatory Academy to Experience College Life at Marymount Manhattan

(New York, NY) A group of 40 third grade students from Mosaic Preparatory Academy, elementary school located in East Harlem, visited Marymount Manhattan on December 8. Lisette Caesar is the principal of the public school, which opened in September 2008, and an alumna who graduated from Marymount Manhattan in 1995 with a degree in Liberal Arts and a minor in Teacher Education. The visit featured classroom visits, tours of the College, lunch and student performances. Each class of students at Mosaic, which is a college preparatory school, visits a higher education institution each year, to encourage awareness and interest in colleges and universities. 

Three Graduates Share “Education Inside” Bedford Hills College Program: MMC Community Learn About Accomplishments, Obstacles

(New York, NY) Three Marymount Manhattan College graduates of the Bedford Hills College Program shared insights about the experience of women in prison seeking higher education at “Education Inside” on November 20 at the College. Nora Moran, Iris Bowen and Cheryl Wilkins discussed their involvement in reestablishing and maintaining a college program at Bedford Hills and about their experiences acquiring a degree while incarcerated. Now that they are on the outside, all three women are committing their academic pursuits and careers to social service.

(New York, NY) Amanda DiLodovico ’11 is the winner of The Gotham Gazette’s essay contest for her piece: “Educating Children with Special Needs.” Deborah Soule ’03, a graduate of the Bedford Hills College Program, was selected as a finalist in the contest for her essay: “Beyond the Rhetoric of Change.” Amanda and Deborah are two members of the Marymount Manhattan community and were two of five finalists in the essay contest themed around “How the 2008 Elections Affect You?” Amanda’s essay was selected as the best of the finalists by readers who voted on The Gotham Gazette Web site

International Student Society Celebrates International Education Week

(New York, NY) The International Student Society hosted a special event featuring several of Marymount Manhattan’s international students in celebration of the 2008 International Education Week on November 17. Fernanda Ferreira, president of the International Students Society, Elektra Yao, Apicha Simaratana and Assistant Professor of Spanish Michael Colvin spoke at the event, which took place in the Regina Peruggi Room. Fernanda, Elektra, and Apicha represent the growing number of international students at Marymount Manhattan.

College to Host Memorial Service to Celebrate Life of Theresa Lang ’97, HD ’08

(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan will host a memorial service to celebrate the life of Theresa Lang, an alumna, former trustee and long-time friend of the College, on December 12. Mrs. Lang passed away on June 30, 2008.

Students Bring Three New Clubs To Marymount Manhattan

Natural Science Department Registers More Than 45 MMC Community Members to Donate Organs

(New York, NY) Students in General Biology I and the Department of Natural Sciences hosted the third annual “Give Us Your Organs!” event at Marymount Manhattan on October 29. More than 45 students, staff and faculty registered for New York State Donate Life Registry thanks to this year’s event. Students shared information about organ donation, tissue banks, and how to sign up to be an organ donor at a table setup in the Nugent Lounge.

Jessica Stevens ’09 Earns First Place Honors at Undergraduate Science Research Symposium

(New York, NY) Jessica Stevens ’09 earned first place honors at the University of Maryland’s 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on October 11, 2008. Stevens participated in the poster competition for the Chemical and Biological Sciences. She presented her project: “CDK5: A Contributor to the Insulin Phenotype of Transdifferentiated Pancreatic Beta Cells.” Her project included the research and findings of her continuing project on mammalian pancreatic development, conducted at Marymount Manhattan College under the advisement of Professor Ann Aguanno. She was one of 260 participants in her division and competed in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology group. 

Student/Faculty Feature: Professor Ann Jablon and Radmila Dym ’10 Collaborate on Linguistics Textbook

(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Professor Ann Jablon and Radmila Dym ’10 have partnered to develop a chapter to be included in Language in the Real World, a textbook for college linguistics courses. Professor Jablon wrote the chapter, which identifies essential concepts in speech-language pathology, including a broad range of communication disorders in child and adult populations. Radmila helped Professor Jablon edit and review the chapter, entitled “Speech and Language Disorders: Their nature, diagnosis, and treatment,” for clarity to assure that it is understandable for an audience of students enrolled in an introductory linguistics course. Radmila has also been instrumental in assembling a thorough glossary for the chapter.

The panel is part of The New Human Rights Dialogue Series, which is a 12-part monthly series of discussions leading up to the celebration on December 10, 2008, of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

(New York, NY) The Jephson Educational Trusts have awarded Marymount Manhattan College a $10,000 grant for student scholarships. The grant will increase student access by expanding financial aid: a key initiative ofThis is the Day, the campaign for Marymount Manhattan. The award brings the College closer to achieving its $25 million campaign goal. It also helps satisfy a challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation, which requires that the College complete the campaign and secures pledges totaling $25 million by July 1, 2009.

(New York, NY) Cheryl Paradis, associate professor of psychology at Marymount Manhattan College, co-wrote a book that helps parents partner effectively and successfully with their college bound teens to find their “right fit” college. In Tackling College Admissions: Sanity + Strategy = Success, Professors Cheryl Paradis and Faren Siminoff show parents how they can become effective coaches for their children by discarding destructive myths about college admissions, understanding their personal parenting style and assessing their teen’s strengths, challenges and needs. Paradis and Siminoff utilize their dual perspectives as professors and parents in the book, which was released in July.

Passing of Friend and Former Trustee Theresa Lang ’97

(New York, NY) Theresa Lang, an alumna, former trustee and long-time friend of Marymount Manhattan College, passed away June 30, 2008. President Judson R. Shaver remembers Mrs. Lang’s recent participation in the 2008 Commencement ceremony, as she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts: “It was a great pleasure to be with Theresa and Gene and others of her family at our recent Commencement, at which we awarded an honorary doctorate to Mrs. Lang,” Shaver said. “Those who were there will long remember her great charm and wit as she addressed our graduates. Theresa Lang was a very special friend; generations of students, faculty and staff will benefit from her presence among us and from her generous support of Marymount Manhattan College, where her memory will long endure.”
