5:30pm-7:30pm RHC Silent Auction Regina Peruggi Room, Main Building

The Residence Hall Council, MMC's student governing body for residents at the 55th Street Residence Hall, presents its 2nd Annual Art Auction in collaboration with Art-Fusion, MMC's art club focused on learning about, discussing, advocating, and enjoying art. This silent art auction will feature the artwork of many students of the MMC Community. The artwork will include paintings, sketches, collages, and many other pieces for sale. This is a great opportunity to add to your homes and offices, but will also make an excellent addition to a drab residence hall room. All proceeds will go directly to the IFOPA, a nonprofit support organization for families dealing with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), a rare genetic condition that causes muscles and other connective tissue to turn into bone, eventually causing immobility as FOP bone fuses joints. Refreshments will be served.

8:00pm-10:00pm The Midnight Oil Festival The Great Hall, Main Building

On the evening of October 25th, students auditioned for and were cast in 7 student-written plays. The catch: the plays weren't written yet! In the hours following the auditions, 7 playwrights penned the individual plays for the festival (based on the casts we've created). The next morning, the directors came in and received their scripts. Shortly thereafter, the actors arrived and rehearsals began. All day, the actors, directors, and crew rehearsed vigorously. So, how did it turn out? Join us to see what happened when we burned the midnight oil.

"Psychoanalysis and Race" 453 Nugent Building

As a theory of social life and the emergence of the self, can psychoanalysis truly help us understand race and racial identification? With few and rare exceptions, psychoanalysis practitioners have been notoriously silent on matters of race and racism. This absence of considerations of race in psychoanalytic discourse has been the occasion for lively debate during the last 20 years. For those of us unwilling to abandon the "irrational" in our appraisal of social life, psychoanalysis remains our theoretical paradigm of choice. To the extent that many phenomena of race defy reason, the possibility for a psychoanalytic understanding of race and racism remains crucial. Join Dr. Manuel Guzman, Assistant Professor of Sociology, as these issues are discussed.

"The Style of Which This is Written: Neutralization of Prepositions in English" 458 Nugent Building

Dr. Susan Behrens, Associate Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Dr. Cindy Mercer, Executive Director for Academic Achievement Programs, noticed a change in the use of prepositions in English. In their work with student essays, they increasingly encounter non-standard uses of prepositions, such as concern on, afraid from, and enamored with. This trend is evident in both native and non-native American English speakers. They believe that the English prepositional system is moving towards an eventual neutralization of the distinction in the prepositional category. Their findings highlight the nature of English as always changing, as it assimilates features from each new generation of speakers. They discuss the data's implications for developmental education teachers, who are increasingly confronted with non-standard prepositional use.
