Study Abroad at
Marymount Manhattan College

Make the world your classroom!

MMC students may spend a semester, a full academic year, or a summer or January studying abroad. The College offers a number of opportunities and formats to earn academic credits in programs throughout the world. Studying abroad enhances learning in several ways: students gain an international focus on world events, come to appreciate differing cultural perspectives, and often re-evaluate longstanding ideas and beliefs once taken for granted. An international experience places students in a global setting that highlights the interrelatedness of nations and the commonality of concerns. Interdisciplinary in nature, study abroad immerses students in another culture.

Study abroad formats:
MMC Affiliations
MMC is a member of two consortia, the Academic Consortium of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS), through which students may participate in study abroad programs in 50 countries.

Travel/Study Courses
During January and summer terms and spring break, Marymount Manhattan often provides shorter term opportunities for groups of students to study in foreign countries under the guidance of a faculty member. Recent offerings include travel/study in England, Greece, and Italy. Learn more about upcoming faculty-led travel courses.

Independent Study Abroad
MMC students may also participate in study abroad programs offered by other institutions. MMC students have studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, South Bank University London, University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, Semester-at-Sea, and many other places.

Bilateral Exchange
The College currently has an exchange program with de Theaterschool in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, a premier dance academy, where MMC Dance majors may take advantage of the option to study abroad without interrupting progress toward the completion of their degrees. Selection is competitive and Dance majors are encouraged to explore this opportunity with their advisor in the Dance Department as well as to meet with the study abroad coordinator.

Eligibility:
To participate in a study abroad program, students should have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8, have completed thirty (30) MMC credits, and have declared a major. Transfer students are required to complete at least fifteen (15) credits (one full semester) at MMC before applying to study abroad. The College recommends that students consider study abroad in their third year; however, some sophomores and seniors go abroad as well.

Terms of participation:
All study abroad credits and grades are recorded on students' official transcripts and included in their MMC grade point average. Students must arrange to have transcripts from the host institution sent to MMC immediately upon the conclusion of the study abroad program. Courses abroad may not be taken for a pass/fail grade.

What to do next:
Students are encouraged to start planning for study abroad at least a year in advance. The first steps are to talk with the faculty advisor and to make an appointment with the study abroad coordinator in the Office of Academic Affairs on the 8th floor Main or check out the Web site. Here students may download the MMC Study Abroad Guide that contains the necessary forms and outlines the process of program selection and credit transfer. Students who are eligible to receive financial aid to study at MMC are generally eligible to apply that aid to the cost of study abroad. MMC scholarships are not applicable to study abroad.

To pick up the MMC Study Abroad Application or just to ask questions, please contact the study abroad coordinator.
