Study Abroad at Marymount Manhattan College
Make the world your classroom!
MMC students may spend a semester or a full academic year studying abroad. The College offers a number of opportunities and formats to earn academic credits in programs throughout the world. Studying abroad enhances learning in several ways: students gain an international focus on world events, come to appreciate differing cultural perspectives, and often re-evaluate long-standing ideas and beliefs once taken for granted. An international experience will place you in a global setting that highlights the interrelatedness of nations and the commonality of problems. Interdisciplinary in nature, study abroad will immerse you in another culture. From this experiential opportunity, your time in another country will enhance the construction of knowledge, values, skills, efficacy and commitment.
Among the central questions you should ask yourself when considering study abroad are:
What fascinates me?
What do I enjoy studying?
What am I passionate about experiencing?
How does this plan of study relate to my career goals?
What new opportunity does this offer me?
If you're thinking about studying abroad, you should visit the Study Abroad Office. The Dean will meet with you to explore and discuss programs that meet your academic interests.
Study Abroad Formats
Independent Study Abroad
MMC has established a number of consortial agreements with other accredited institutions, through which students may choose, apply to and register for study in a particular program of interest. MMC students have studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, the British Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, Stellenbosch University in South Africa, the American University in Cairo, Semester-at-Sea, the University of Shanghai, and many other places.
Travel/Study Courses
During January and Summer terms, Marymount Manhattan often provides shorter term opportunities for groups of students to study in foreign countries under the guidance of a faculty member. Recent offerings have included travel/study in England, Italy, Greece, Ecuador, and Mexico. For more information contact the study abroad office or check the course listings for each term.
Bilateral Exchange Programs
The College currently sponsors programs with two universities abroad that allow for an exchange of students between each campus and ours. Under these agreements, students who participate may apply all financial aid to the cost of their study. For more detailed information contact the study abroad office or your faculty advisor in the disciplines covered by the agreement.
deTheatreschool
deTheatreschool in Amsterdam, is a premier Dance academy, where MMC Dance majors may take advantage of the option to study abroad without interrupting progress toward the completion of their programs. Selection is competitive and Dance majors are encouraged to explore this opportunity with their advisor in the Dance Department as well as to meet with the Dean. More information can be found at http://detheaterschool.nl/EN/home.jsp.
University of Birmingham
Students pursuing degrees in either English or Business Management may take part in an exchange with the University of Birmingham, in England. Majors in these areas are encouraged to explore this opportunity with their faculty advisors as well as to meet with the Dean. Learn more by going to http://www.bham.ac.uk/.
Eligibility
To pursue study abroad at MMC, you should have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0, have completed thirty credits at MMC and have declared a major. Transfer students are required to complete fifteen credits at MMC before pursuing study abroad.
Terms of participation
All study abroad credits are included in your GPA and recorded on your official transcript. In order to facilitate this process, you must make arrangements to have transcripts from the host institution sent to MMC immediately upon the conclusion of the study abroad experience. Courses abroad may not be taken for a pass/fail grade.
What to do next
If you're thinking of studying abroad, you are encouraged to start planning at least a year in advance. The first step is to make an appointment with the Dean in charge of Study Abroad (the Office located in Academic Affairs) or check out the website at www.mmm.edu/study/abroad.html. Here you may download your MMC Passport to Study Abroad that contains the necessary forms and outlines the process of program selection and credit transfer. If you are eligible to receive financial aid to study at MMC, you are generally eligible to apply their aid to the expense of study abroad. MMC scholarships are not applicable to study abroad unless used for an approved MMC bilateral exchange program.
To pick up your MMC Passport to Study Abroad or just to ask questions, please contact the Study Abroad Office.
