Using Turnitin

Turnitin.com is a comprehensive teaching tool. It is most famous for checking against plagiarism. Here are some instructions to facilitate use of the anti-plagiarism feature.
The first step is to create your own turnitin.com account:
  1. Log on to computer.
  2. Go to Internet.
  3. Go to http://www.turnitin.com.
  4. In upper right, click on "create user profile."
  5. A new screen will come up asking you to create a profile. Choose "instructor."
  6. The next screen will ask for the account number and password that establishes that you're with an institution that has subscribed to turitin.com. Marymount Manhattan College's account number is 19202. The password is mmcjoin2. When you've entered these, touch "next."
  7. A new screen will come up asking for your email address. Type in your Marymount email address, including the @mmm.edu part.
  8. Type in password. Turnitin.com requires passwords have at least one letter and one number.
  9. Choose your preferred "secret question" and answer it so turnitin.com will have an additional way to identify you.
  10. Put in a class name.
  11. Create a password for that class.
  12. Create an assignment to be checked.
  13. The program will have some additional questions about the assignment, such as due date.

That's only to get ready to use turnitin.com on a paper. The next step is to have the paper in digital format. Most professors require students submit papers on diskette or via email, which the professors then save in their U drives temporarily. When a suspicious paper appears:
  1. Log on to computer.
  2. Go to Internet.
  3. Go to http://www.turnitin.com.
  4. In upper right, enter email address, with @mmm.edu portion.
  5. Enter password.
  6. Click logon.
  7. You should go directly to your list of classes and assignments. Click on "submit" on tool bar above list.
  8. Start creating a profile for the paper turnitin.com is to check by typing in first name of paper author.
  9. Type in last name of paper author.
  10. Type in paper title (shortened version is ok).
  11. Browse for the electronic version of the paper as one would browse for a document to attach.
  12. Once paper to be examined is attached, click on "submit."

It can take turnitin.com anywhere from a few seconds to a day to process the paper. To check the results of turnitin.com's research:
  1. Log on to computer.
  2. Go to Internet.
  3. Go to http://www.turnitin.com.
  4. In upper right, enter email address, with @mmm.edu portion.
  5. Enter password.
  6. Click logon.
  7. Click on the class that you want.
  8. Click on the inbox to see whether you've received mail.
  9. Click on an individual piece of mail to see the report.
