The Moby-Dick Project Featured in the Hewitt Gallery of Art

Curated by Hallie Cohen and Duston Spear, The Moby-Dick Project is a collaborative art exhibition featuring work by Bedford Hills College Program (BHCP) students and other invited artists.

On Thursday, November 2, 2017, friends of the Marymount Manhattan College and Bedford Hills communities gathered to celebrate the opening of The Moby-Dick Project, a unique exhibition of artworks based on Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, by Herman Melville. Pieces were created by the incarcerated women artists of the BHCP, after participating in a course calling “Illustrating the Novel,” taught by professor and artist Duston Spear, as well as by invited artists whose work shares an affinity with the great American novel. Themes of obsession, cultural identity, communication across space, time, and species, and the embrace of the sea are the subjects of interpretation.

Those in attendance during the opening reception were also treated to a unique, one-night-only display of additional BHCP student work, including academic writings and poetry.

The exhibition will run from October 30-December 6, 2017. A film about the history of the BHCP is also displayed in the Gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

The Moby-Dick Project is a recipient of the 2017 NYFA Opportunity Grant.
