MMC Artists Represent at Community Board 8’s “City Canvas” Initiative

Throughout a sunny weekend in early June, three members of the MMC community joined Upper East Side neighbors for a two-day art and music fair on 91st Street. The event was sponsored by “City Canvas,” a new initiative organized by Manhattan Community Board 8 to celebrate the reemergence and “reawakening” of New York City after nearly 15 months since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This weekend was spectacular,” says Alicia Steeves ’23, who offered framed prints of her photography to those strolling through the plaza of James Cagney Place. “The mixture of amazing art and socializing with fellow artists and patrons was intoxicating” she adds. The sophomore is working towards a B.F.A. in Dance with a concentration in Ballet and a minor in Art Photography. “I am so honored to have participated in this lovely event and to have met so many amazing people,” she says. “I cannot wait for more of these experiences!” More of Alicia’s work can be viewed on her website.

Cait Gagnon ’22, a B.A. in Art with a concentration in Illustration and Animation, also showcased their work and offered prints of original charcoal and ink illustrations. Follow them on Instagram at Mr. Cait Illustration.

Cheryl Kaplan, who serves as the Assistant to the Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO at MMC, displayed her most recent hobby of creative collage work. Throughout a career in marketing and advertising, Kaplan has explored a variety of media, dabbling in jewelry making, wire sculpture, and furniture painting before arriving at collage and photography. She even sold two of her pieces showcased throughout the weekend!

We love to see members of our community engaging with our neighbors and enjoying the beauty of New York City!
