WLL Professor Jennifer Brown Publishes New Book

Professor of Writing, Literature, and Language Jennifer Brown, Ph.D., alongside co-editor Nicole Rice from St. John’s University, recently published her new book Manuscript Culture and Medieval Devotional Traditions: Essays in Honour of Michael G. Sargent. With a focus on the scholarship of late medieval English devotional literature, the book contains essays exploring the great religious and devotional works of the Middle Ages in their manuscript and other contexts.

“The book is a ‘festschrift’ which is volume celebrating someone, in this case my dissertation advisor Michael Sargent,” says Dr. Brown. “Another former student of his, Nicole Rice, and I solicited essays related to and building on his work from colleagues and former students. My essay is on the medieval nuns of Syon Abbey and the texts they read there—texts I also teach in my Medieval Literature courses.”

Before publishing Manuscript Culture and Medieval Devotional Traditions, Dr. Brown also published Fruit of the Orchard: Catherine of Siena in Late Medieval and Early Modern England in 2018, Sexuality, Sociality and Cosmology in Medieval Texts in 2013, and more.
