Multiple Dance Alum Perform in Bill T. Jones’ ‘Deep Blue Sea’ at The Park Avenue Armory

Deep Blue Sea premiered Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at The Park Avenue Armory.

‘“Deep Blue Sea,” by Bill T. Jones, was conceived for the vastness of the Park Avenue Armory’s Drill Hall. Drawing on “Moby-Dick” and the life of M.L.K., designed by the architect Elizabeth Diller, and building from a single, lonely figure (Jones himself, in a rare appearance) to a flood of a hundred bodies, it is a work of oceanic ambition. Originally, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company was scheduled to début the piece in April, 2020. Unlike Jones’s “Afterwardsness,” which was made and performed at the Armory during the pandemic, “Deep Blue Sea” reflects a time before covid, with masses of people in physical contact…’ (The New Yorker, Bill Siebert)

‘“Deep Blue Sea” also marks the first time that Jones, now in his late 60s, will perform in more than 15 years. In addition to dancers from the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, the ambitious piece includes a movement score that incorporates nearly 90 members from the broader New York community. The piece features dancers of all sizes and abilities, including deaf and hard-of-hearing dancers.

At its core, the dance is about the tension and interplay between singular and group identities: the “we” and the “me.” Jones’ understanding of what that means has deepened, certainly in the context of the pandemic and the most recent U.S. election…’ (WWD, Kristen Tauer)
