Academic Writing Program Instructor Keith Meatto Published Twice in ‘New York Times’

Keith Meatto, MFA, a Writing Instructor for MMC’s Academic Writing Program, recently published two articles in The New York Times discussing culture and creating lesson plans.

In “Teaching About the Native American Fight for Representation, Repatriation and Recognition,” Meatto selected six NYT articles published in the last year featuring stories of Native Americans fighting for civil rights. Meatto then provides six short lesson plans about the actions that Native Americans are taking to redress past wrongs and foster a better future.

In his second article, “Learning About Latin American and Hispanic Culture and History Through Music,” Meatto explores how music can represent a mix of cultures, identities, and histories. Three short lesson plans are presented that detail the history of reggaeton, the legacy of the Tejano star Selena, and the diversity of Cuba’s music.

At MMC and its Bedford Hills College Program, Meatto teaches a literature course that explores the interplay between individual problems and social issues including war, poverty, immigration, and discrimination based on race, ethnicity, and gender.
