Alvin Eng

Alvin Eng is a native NYC playwright, memoirist, performer, acoustic punk rock raconteur and educator. His plays and performances have been seen Off-Broadway, through the U.S., as well as in Paris, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China. He has also written for the 24 Hour Plays and A-Train Plays Festivals. His memoir, OUR LAUNDRY, OUR TOWN: My Chinese American Life from Flushing to the Downtown Stage and Beyond, was published in hardcover by Fordham University Press in May 2022. A paperback edition was published in September 2023. Three Trees, the first of Eng’s Portrait Plays that examine and dramatize the parallels between portraiture, history and power as manifested in the convergence of different disciplines, eras and cultures, was published by Obie Award-winning playwright Caridad Svich’s No Passport Press in 2021. Three Trees explores the haunting relationship between renowned 20^th century sculptor Alberto Giacometti and his primary muse/model of the 1950s, Japanese philosopher, Isaku Yanaihara. Eng is also the author and editor of the oral history/play anthology, Tokens? The NYC Asian American Experience on Stage (Temple University Press/Asian American Writers Workshop). He is currently developing a new solo performance piece with music, Here Comes Johnny Yen Again (or How I Kicked Punk) with Mabou Mines. The piece was previously workshopped with Dixon Place. Honors include: Yip Harburg Fellowship to attend NYU/Tisch School of the Arts’ Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program; LMCC Creative Engagement and Creative Learning grants; being twice appointed to the Fulbright Specialists Roster in U.S. Studies/Theatre; three-time recipient of NYSCA/NYFA Fellowships in Playwriting/Screenwriting, Performance Art/Emergent Forms and most recently in 2020 for “Nonfiction Literature” to complete Our Laundry, Our Town. www.alvineng.com
