Women’s Leadership in Publishing Workshop
Date: Friday, April 27, 2018
During this one-day workshop, you will hear from women leaders across the publishing industry. They will share their experiences in this fast-paced and rapidly changing field. In addition to presentations and panel discussions, the day will provide numerous opportunities for informal conversation and networking. Whether you are currently working in publishing and are looking for advice on how to advance your career, or you are a student preparing to launch your career in the publishing industry, this workshop is the perfect occasion to meet accomplished female leaders in the field and to learn from their experiences and expertise.

As space in the workshop is limited, all participants must register in advance.
The registration fee for this workshop is $30 (including coffee, lunch, and closing reception). This fee is waived for current students.
Seats are guaranteed to early registrants. The Early Registration Deadline is Friday, April 13th.

Convener: Manuela Soares
Manuela Soares is a full-time faculty member in Pace University’s MS in Publishing Program and also serves as Associate Director of the Pace University Press. Her 30-year career in the publishing industry encompassed both books and magazines. Most recently, she was Managing Editor for the Scholastic Trade Book division (overseeing eight hardcover imprints and the publication of the first five Harry Potter books). She previously worked as a Senior Editor at Rizzoli.
Keynote Speaker: Jennifer Perry
Jennifer A. Perry has spent her career creating educational resources for children, schools, and families as a museum educator, teacher, book editor, and currently as Vice President of Media Products & Publisher at Sesame Workshop, home to the educational TV show Sesame Street and other children’s properties. At Sesame, Perry oversees strategic partnerships for several media-based business units, including publishing, DVD, streaming video, apps, music, and museums. She also established and now manages Sesame Workshop’s corporate archive, which includes a large collection of Sesame Street original book art dating back to 1970. Sesame Street will celebrate its milestone 50th anniversary in 2019, so Perry is focused on finding product and distribution partnerships to keep this uniquely influential and beloved brand relevant for all ages far into the 21st century. Her favorite Sesame Street character is Grover: who’s yours?
Featured Speaker: Veronica Wilson
Veronica Viviana Wilson serves as Director, Business Development at The Nielsen Company, whose digital reach and resonance tools provide the metrics that guide brand marketers in the effective optimization of their advertising campaigns, planning future campaigns, and generating guarantees on current campaigns. As a Nielsen Director of Business Development, Veronica goes to market with the gold standard of digital measurement giving advertisers the confidence that the digital funds they are investing are spent effectively and efficiently.
Prior to joining Nielsen, Veronica was Associate Publisher, Ad Sales at Meredith Corporation for a national women’s lifestyle brand and two national parenthood brands. In her role Veronica managed integrated multi-platform sales nationally, overseeing four offices. She has been instrumental in launching an independent research series, signature events, and developing partnerships with companies/organizations such as CNN/CNNE, Univision/Univision.com, UNWomen, museums, and retailers such as CVS, Walgreens and Wal-Mart to help bolster the division’s offerings from an integrated marketing perspective. Veronica also was Associate Publisher, Ad Sales at Conde Nast for their Bridal Group division in 2008, overseeing six offices across the country. She worked at Time Inc. from 1999 to 2008 for a national women’s lifestyle magazine/website in various positions, including National Advertising Director, where she oversaw five offices nationally.
Veronica comes from a family of educators, so it’s no surprise that she has lent her publishing expertise to Pace University, as an Adjunct Lecturer to their Masters in Publishing Program, since 2008. Veronica also graduated from Pace University in New York City with a Masters of Science and Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelors in Business Administration. Veronica lives in Brooklyn, New York and has traveled to six of our seven continents, visiting over 30 countries.
Featured Speaker: Kathy Sandler
Kathy Sandler is Senior Manager of Content Applications at Penguin Random House. She previously worked in eBooks at Scholastic, where she helped launch Storia – a free teacher-recommended eReader for PC, iPad, and Android Tablet. Before that, she consulted at Meredith, helping to launch Parents and Fitness magazines to iPad and Android. She also worked at Hearst in publishing technology for over 20 years. She has an MBA from NYU and a BA from George Washington University.
Panel on Diversity in Children’s Book Publishing: This panel will explore issues of diversity in both the content of children’s book publishing and leadership within it.
Moderator: Cheryl Willis Hudson
Cheryl Willis Hudson is an author, publisher, and entrepreneur with more than 40 years of experience creating books for children. Ms. Hudson began her career doing textbook design for publishers such as Houghton Mifflin and Macmillan. Noticing a lack of quality Black-interest books for her own two children, Ms. Hudson and her husband Wade formed Just Us Books, Inc., in 1988—a publishing company that specializes in children’s books focused on Black experiences, history, and culture. Ms. Hudson’s AFRO-BETS® ABC Book was Just Us Books’ first published title.
An active member of her community and publishing industry organizations, Ms. Hudson serves on Advisory Board of the Langston Hughes Library at Alex Haley Farm, operated by the Children’s Defense Fund. She is a member of the Author’s Guild, PEN America, and the recipient of the Stephen Crane Award. She is also a 2003 inductee of the International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent.
Ms. Hudson has written over 24 children’s books, including the classic Bright Eyes, Brown Skin, Many Colors of Mother Goose, and Come By Here, Lord: Everyday Prayers for Children, selected as children’s book of the year for 2003 by BlackBoard, Inc. (Just Us Books, Inc.); Hold Christmas In Your Heart, What Do You Know, Snow!, the What a Baby board book series (Scholastic, Inc.) Hands Can and Construction Zone (Candlewick Press); and My Friend Maya Loves to Dance (Abrams).
