    Why Study Arts Management?

You have a passion for the arts and a brain for business. The Arts Management minor brings together the business and creative sides of the performing and visual arts, readying you for a range of career paths in the arts industries.

Why Study Arts Management at MMC?

The Arts Management minor provides you with broad foundational knowledge in the business of the arts, then lets you pursue your unique interests through courses like Beyond Broadway, History of Museums and Collections, and Producing for Creative Media. The minor directly complements majors in the arts and business, and it welcomes all students who want a behind-the-scenes look at careers in the arts. You’ll learn from accomplished professionals in the field, and tap into the cultural resources of New York City for projects, guest speakers, and field trips. Gain practical experience and build your resume through internships at dance and theatre companies, music venues, galleries and museums, arts advocacy organizations, artist management agencies, community centers, and alternative spaces.

    What You Will Learn

    • You will acquire a broad knowledge of how the arts are funded, managed, and presented in both nonprofit and for-profit arenas.
    • You’ll learn skills in marketing, publicity, budgeting, fundraising, and grant writing as they apply to the arts.
    • You’ll learn to identify and develop skills in leadership, effective communication, and organization.
    • You’ll gain an understanding of how social, economic, and political factors influence arts programs and institutions.

    • You’ll think creatively and critically about the mission of an arts organization, how it addresses issues of access, participation, and equity, and how it contributes to the wider community.
    • You’ll learn to think about your individual career path in a strategic way to keep pace with change and make a positive contribution to the field.

    • Taking classes within the Arts Management minor, such as The History of Museums and Collections, complemented my majors in Art and Art History and assisted me in discovering how to employ my knowledge and skills while working in various cultural institutions throughout New York. In fact, the invaluable experiences gave me the confidence necessary to succeed in my role as an Administrative Intern at the Queens Historical Society during my last semester at MMC.

      Jillian Banks ’20

Class of 2020, Major in Art History and Art (double concentration in Studio Art and Graphic Design), Minor in Arts Management and Chemistry

    • The History and Mission of Arts Institutions was a very insightful course into the world of Theater Management. From this course, I gained a comprehensive understanding of both Theatre Management and fundraising for nonprofit arts organizations.

      Ariella Bellingham ’21

Class of 2021, Major in Art History, Minor in Studio Art

    • Through the connections fostered by the MMC and the variety of skill sets I learned within the Arts Management minor, I graduated ready to join the industry and make change. Having the knowledge of all of the elements that go into producing theatre has empowered me to create my own work and opportunities as a young Indigenous/Latina director.
