Our alums keep us #MMCProud! We’ve got great news to report from the Classes of 2023, 2011, and 2002! 🔵 Melissa Ortiz ’23 will earn her master’s in Art Teacher Education from the Rhode Island School of Design in June. This month, she traveled to Minneapolis to present at the annual convention of @naea_arteducators, the leading professional membership organization for visual arts, design, and media arts education professionals. Her talk emphasized the importance of supporting students’ mental health and listening to emotion through student work. 🔵 Kevin Shimko ’11 recently started a new role as the Community Services Entertainment Superintendent of the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center and Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga, California. In this new position, he oversees the daily operations and artistic vision of the Lewis Family Playhouse, a 560-seat performing arts venue and theater presenting plays, musicals, dance, comedy, live music, and more. 🔵 Travis Johnides ’02 (right) is one-half of the acoustic punk duo Bitters and Distractions, which recently signed with the Berkeley, California-based record label Sell The Heart Records. Their album was just released on the label via all streaming services and on 7” vinyl record. Check their music out at bittersanddistractions.com. Congrats! 💙

New Yorkers who need assistance filing their returns this tax season are getting a helping hand from MMC’s Business students. The College is participating in the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax preparation services to low-income filers, people with disabilities, and limited English speakers. Under a partnership with the Food Bank for New York City, MMC students are serving as VITA tax preparers at the organization’s Tax and Finance Center in Manhattan and for its remote tax prep service through April 15. Each student has passed IRS certification exams and undergone hours of training. Since 2011, more than 40 MMC Business students have volunteered for the program, collectively preparing over 500 income tax returns. The College’s participation this year was organized by Associate Professor of Accounting and Assistant Business Division Chair Andrea Tsentides, MBA, CPA, who enlisted three of her students for the effort: Christina Newland ’25, Alana Gallante ’24, and Peter Nierenhausen ’24 (pictured above).
