2017 New Student Convocation

On Thursday August 31, 2017, Marymount Manhattan College officially welcomed the Class of 2021 and new transfer students to the campus community at New Student Convocation, a festive event attended by students, faculty, staff, and trustees.

The event opened with greetings by President Kerry Walk, Ph.D. Students were also welcomed by Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Carol Jackson, PhD.; Student Government President, Alexis Garcia ’18; MMC Trustee Edward Van Saders ’95; Alumna Sameera Uddin ’14; Assistant Director for Student and Community Engagement, Zakkiyya Taylor; and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, Sharon Meagher, Ph.D.

A highlight of the event was the pinning ceremony, during which Peer Leaders came to the stage and shared what the MMC pin—a small pin in the shape of an apple—meant to them. Dr. Meagher invited the new students to take their pin and pass it to two other students, and finally, all students attached the pin to their clothing, proudly designating themselves Griffins. Convocation concluded with a performance of MMC’s alma mater by all those in attendance, officially marking the induction of this year’s incoming students into the MMC community.
