  • SPJ and Facebook workshop with Carolyn Purcell
On Monday, April 8, Emmy-award winning producer and director of editorial, programming and operations for Verizon’s hyper-local FiOS1 News networks, Carolyn Purcell, led a workshop for Marymount Manhattan students and faculty on how to up their social media skills on Instagram and Facebook.

The workshop was sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the social media giant, Facebook. The two organizations have collaborated to train rising professionals on utilizing Facebook and Instagram tools to promote content and engage the public in community stories.

During the workshop, Ms. Purcell discussed how to create conversations on Facebook groups and the effectiveness of “Finsta” accounts to cover beats. She gave an overview of live video feeds, which get up to six times more visibility than just posting videos. Most importantly, she stressed the ways to protect your pages and profiles from getting hacked.

Keep the conversation going on Facebook and explore the SPJ training materials.

Many thanks to Tatiana Serafin, MFA, Communication and Media Arts faculty!
