BHCP Student Publishes Book Review in Online Journal

Tawana Anthony, a student in MMC’s Bedford Hills College Program (BHCP), wrote an insightful and incisive review of Homer Venter’s Life and Death in Rikers Island, published in Metropolitics, a peer-reviewed online journal that publishes academic essays aimed at an international audience.

Entitled “Incarceration, Human Rights, and Health: Life and Death in Rikers Island,” Anthony’s review commends Venter for his exposé on the inhumane and often life-threatening conditions that become “not just real—normal” for inmates at New York City’s most infamous jail. However, Anthony also highlights the ways in which Venter’s proposed solutions fail to address the deeper systemic problems plaguing the country’s correctional and healthcare systems.
