It’s a Happening: Bringing the Arts Together

MMC held its second annual pop-up event, It’s a Happening: Arts at The Judy, on May 8, drawing a packed house with its wide range of art and performances.

Organized by Beth Shipley, an associate professor of Art and director of the Judith Mara Carson Center for Visual Arts, the showcase allows students and faculty to see work from the College’s visual, digital media and video production, creative writing, and performing arts programs. This year’s event spotlighted the creations of some 250 students in photography, fine art, dance, theatre, music, creative writing, film, video, animation, costume design, stage lighting, and more.

“One of our goals was to activate every single space in The Judy with a diverse group of student works,” Shipley said.

Shipley and several other faculty members first came up with the idea for the event five years ago but found new impetus—and space—for it with the 2022 opening of the visual arts center, known affectionately as The Judy, and its emphasis on interdisciplinary creativity. She and a cross-disciplinary committee of faculty and staff members curate the show, which takes months to organize.

The event featured several interactive elements, including live performances every 10 minutes, costume models and theatrical makeup demonstrations, and a real-time etching by an Art student.
