João Maurício Carvalho, a gymnastics champion in his native Brazil, has a degree in Physical Education from São Paulo University and a BA in Dance from Empire State College. He is also a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Method Practitioner.
A Fulbright Scholar, Mr. Carvalho studied dance in New York with Louis Falco, Jennifer Muller and Cindy Green among others. Some of his past credits include dancing and choreographing for Balé da Cidade de São Paulo, as well as serving as Choreographic Assistant for the John Boorman film “The Emerald Forest”, in which he also appeared as well as in John Turturro’s film “Romance And Cigarettes.”
Mr. Maurício was a member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for ten years where he originated many roles including a feature role in the Emmy Award winning Dance in America Production of “Speaking in Tongues”.
He has choreographed, with Susana Yamauchi works for Balé da Cidade de São Paulo (Brazil.)
He co-choreographed and performed the full evening dance “Muito Romântico,” which was presented in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and toured Europe in 2001-2004.
In 2005 he co-choreographed with Susana Yamauchi “CUBO,” in São Paulo, which toured in Spain in 2006.
He has choreographed for the students of ELC and Marymount Manhattan College where he has been teaching since 2000.
In 2008 he choreographed Vaclav Havel’s “Temptation” at La Mama directed by Zishan Ugurlu.
In addition to teaching at the Paul Taylor School, Marymount Manhattan College, Eugene Lang College, Montclair State University, Juilliard Summer Intensive and various other schools around the world, he co-directs with Mrs. Yamauchi the São Paulo based pick up company “LúdicaDança.”
