Catherine Cabeen, MFA, (Artistic Director of Hyphen, Dancer, Choreographer), currently performs in her own work with Hyphen, and with Richard Move. She is a former member of the Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (1997-2005), and was Jones’ Assistant Choreographer on the original production of Spring Awakening at the Atlantic Theater. She is also a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Pearl Lang Dance Theater among others.
Catherine Cabeen – Hyphen has received commissions from On the Boards, Donald Byrd’s Spectrum Dance Theater, the American College Dance Festival NW, the Visa2Dance Festival in Dar Es Salaam, Alsarab Dance Troupe and the Lebanese American University in Byblos Lebanon, Moving People Dance Theater, Pig Iron Theater Company, Arc Dance Company, Lehua Dance Company, and the Cabiri, among others. TheNew York Times recently called Cabeen’s Hyphen, “highly kinetic, complex… visually exquisite,” and “beautifully performed.”
Cabeen founded Hyphen (formerly Catherine Cabeen and Company) in 2009. In the last five years Hyphen has toured nationally and internationally, and received support from both local and national arts funding organizations. Cabeen was a finalist in The A.W.A.R.D. Show! Seattle: 2009. During the summer of 2011, she was Emerging Choreographer at Bates Dance Festival.
In Seattle, where Cabeen was based from 2006-2013, she performed as a guest artist with Donald Byrd’s Spectrum Dance Theater, and the Chamber Dance Company, among others. Cabeen teaches internationally; contemporary dance technique and composition, 20th century dance history, and workshops based on movement and gender. Cabeen is also a certified yoga instructor and a teaching artist for the Bill T Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company. Cabeen has been a member of the dance faculties at Cornish College, University of Washington, and Middlebury College. She is honored to be joining the faculty at Marymount Manhattan College.

In 2014 Hyphen has presented new work at the CoolNY Festival in Dumbo New York, Gallery Galleon in Vieques Puerto Rico, Place of Dance Book Signing in Middlebury VT, the Mahaney Center Art Museum in Middlebury VT, Boost Dance Festival in Seattle WA, Dance Fremont in Seattle WA, and the Cape Dance Festival in Provincetown MA.
Also in 2014 Cabeen represented the Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company at the Southern VT Dance Festival in Brattleboro by teaching repertory and technique, giving the festival’s keynote lecture on the creative process, and performing, “Floating the Tongue,” an iconic solo of Bill T Jones’ from 1978.
Just before the school year began Cabeen returned from Singapore where she was performing with Richard Move’s MoveOpolis! in Martha @… The 1963 Interview, for the Singapore International Art Festival.
