As part of our MMC 101 Workshop series, freshmen students who are enrolled in MMC 101 are invited to join us for a variety of workshops and information sessions on Thursday, November 8th. Check out the options below and be sure to register! Remember, attendance is mandatory. There is limited availability for each session.


Diversity 101

Time: 10:00 am
Location: Regina Peruggi Room
Description: Diversity 101 is an introductory workshop to diversity/inclusion concepts and how they shape our world. Designed to be accessible for individuals who are eager to learn about these topics, but don’t know where to start. This workshop is interactive and will provide participants with an understanding of vocabulary and how to identify/disrupt “isms” in their everyday lives.

FOCUS ASSISTIVE tECHNOLOGY

Time: 11:00 am

Description: If you’ve ever wondered how screen reader software and lecture recording pens work, then check out this presentation for Kurzweil 3000 and the Echo Live Scribe Pen. These tools make studying and paper writing a lot easier. During this presentation you will get to see both the software and hardware in action and be able to pose questions to the Assistive Technology Specialist of Marymount Manhattan College.

Emotional Style: What’s Yours?

Description: In CareerLab 1, you learned about your unique strengths and how those qualities can help you succeed as a student and a young professional. Now in Lab 2, Build Your Brand, you will learn how to promote your strengths through building your personal brand in a way that captures who you are in the most professional and positive way. Through Brand Yourself, an online reputation management tool that scans your social media profiles, you will learn to present your best self.

Academic INTEGRITY

Description: Please attend a presentation on the subject of academic integrity. This presentation will allow for both questions and discussion and will feature a PowerPoint presentation. The topics covered will be plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, cheating, and examples of actual plagiarism.  In addition, the presentation will define what academic honesty is and the resources the college has in place to assist students. Also, two short videos, one created by Ted (TED Talks), will be shown.

Research Strategies

Time: 4:00 pm
Location: Commons West
Description: Bring your assignments and questions or just come and listen in for a discussion of how students go from thesis statements to research papers brimming with citations. Learn about the hard-copy and online resources available at MMC’s library. Explore the potential for online research, and how to evaluate what you find on the Internet. See your options for citation help. No two assignments are exactly alike, but this session will help you develop strategies for getting work done with greater efficiency and less stress.

Veteran’s Day Community service project

Time: 3:00 pm

Description: Paracord Bracelet Making. Not only are the bracelets really cool-looking, they can actually be used to save a life in an emergency situation. Virtually all branches of the U.S. military use paracord (which gets its name from parachute cord and can hold up to 550 lbs. weight). The quick release survival bracelet gives the person wearing it 12 feet to use in an emergency. But really and most importantly, a paracord survival bracelet lets our heroic service men and women know you care, that you remember and that you appreciate them.
