  • Fake News and Evaluating Sources

What is fake news? Fake news or “hoax” news is not news at all! In fact it is deliberately published online with the intention of creating profits and/or disrupting normal journalism practices. Often the reader finds an article link via social media and is never able to verify the accuracy of the information being presented as “news” – this practice is intentionally done!

How does it affect me as a student/researcher? Or just a regular citizen?  The need to evaluate and use critical thinking skills – and the ability to question why and how the information is being disseminated has become increasingly important!

    The following websites can help:

Allsides.com:  website that presents “balanced” news that is non-partisan with a focus on exposing bias.

Factcheck.org: is website that is nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics and is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

Fact-checking rearch:  A non-profit website hosted by The American Press Institute with the mission of helping the news industry fulfill the purpose of the First Amendment.

How do we become better citizens of information? : Hosted by the University of Minnesota with the goal of teaching students how to “critically think” about news and information.

Politifact:is a fact-checking website that rates the accuracy of claims by elected officials and others on its Truth-O-Meter.

Misinformation and fact checking: Based at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, Journalist’s Resource examines news topics through a research lens.
