Inclusivity Climate Survey

In Spring 2016, the President’s Taskforce on Inclusivity designed and administered a survey for MMC students, faculty and staff. The goal of the survey was to assess the college’s climate with regard to diversity and inclusivity (for example, in terms of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, physical, psychological, and learning disabilities, etc.). The survey was anonymous and confidential.

The committee plans to use the results of this survey to identify and prioritize challenges and opportunities to improve the College’s climate for inclusivity.

Response:

A total of 298 respondents completed the survey:  190 students, 37 faculty, 70 staff and 1 unknown.

Results Highlights:

Overall, respondents strongly/somewhat agree that MMC allows everyone to feel included even if they have different backgrounds (mean score of 1.74 out of 4; strongly agree = 1; somewhat agree = 2; somewhat disagree = 3 and strongly disagree = 4).

Areas of Strength

MMC’s areas of strength include inclusiveness related to sexual and gender identity, allowing people to be themselves and making people feel safe to be who they are.  The highest mean scores show that:

  • Respondents believe that MMC creates an environment that allows people to feel that they are part of the college community no matter what their:
    • sexual identity
    • gender identity
    • Respondents feel accepted at MMC for being themselves
    • Respondents feel safe being who they are

Areas for Improvement

MMC’s areas for improvement include increasing/improving facilities and inclusiveness for people with physical disabilities, enhancing inclusiveness for people with differing political perspectives, training students in appropriate responses to diversity issues, and offering an inclusive curriculum.  The lowest mean scores are for:

  • Facilities accessible to individuals with physical disabilities
  • An environment that allows people to feel that they are part of the college community no matter what their:
    • physical disability
    • political perspective
    • Students in the classroom responding appropriately when issues related to diversity arise
    • Students outside of the classroom responding appropriately when issues related to diversity arise
    • An inclusive curriculum

Significant Differences Between Students, Faculty and Staff

Students consistently have stronger positive mean scores than faculty and staff on questions with an agreement scale.  All but a few questions on the survey use the agreement scale:  Strongly Agree = 1; Somewhat Agree = 2; Somewhat Disagree = 3; Strongly Disagree = 4.  The lower the mean, the stronger the agreement and the more positive the score.

Staff is less likely than students to agree that:

    • ethnic identity
    • national identity
    • physical disability
    • MMC facilities are accessible for individuals with physical disabilities
    • Individuals can feel safe at MMC being who they are
