MMC Peer Leaders (PLs) are student leaders who help new students become acclimated to MMC and the larger New York City community. Peer Leaders work with new students to provide them with a clear understanding of academic life and opportunities to become involved in the College community. The PLs are role models, advisors, friends, but most of all, they are peer mentors who care about the growth and development of incoming students.
Becoming a Peer Leader at Marymount Manhattan College
Peer Leaders are chosen after an extensive application and selection process. Selected leaders go through intensive training by College staff to gain skills necessary to serve as a resource for students. Peer Leaders play a pivotal role in welcoming new students to the College during Griffin Days Orientation in June and Welcome Week in August/September. Additionally, PLs provide assistance to the New York City (NYC) seminars and NYC 100 workshops during the fall semester. During the 2018 spring semester, PLs work one hour per week with their students outside of the classroom getting involved in opportunities on campus and exploring NYC.
Training and Staff Development
Peer Leaders attend a weekend training, at the end of April, in preparation for the Griffin Days summer orientation sessions which will take place in June. PL Training will cover a wide variety of content in order to prepare PLs to best serve as a guide and mentor to the incoming students. Training sessions are long and intensive, appropriately so as the PLs have the closest contact with new students and are often cited as the most impactful element of the entire orientation program.
