Voting is a crucial part of our democracy and a momentous occasion for each of us, especially if this is your first opportunity to vote in a major election. Marymount Manhattan College encourages all students to be informed about the political process, engage in the discourse, and register to vote. We have compiled some resources below to aid you in the registration process, whether you are a native New Yorker or hail from across the country.
If you have any questions about how to register, please review the frequently asked questions below as they may provide the answers. Additionally, we have provided links to a series of non-partisan organizations that are geared towards educating voters about the elections process and potential issues to be voted upon.
- To register to vote in New York State, simply download and print the form (Adobe PDF format) from the New York State Board of Elections Web Site here NYS Voter Registration or call 1-800-FOR-VOTE to have a NYS Voter Registration Form mailed to you. You may also obtain a voter registration form by visiting the Office of Student Affairs on the 8th floor of Carson Hall.

How and Where to register to Vote (Deadlines)
- You can register in person at your NYS county board of elections
- or at any New York State Agency-Based voter registration center.
- You can enter your name directly into our mailing list database to have a New York State Voter Registration Form mailed to you. (NOTE: The same form can be downloaded, using the link below.)
- You can call our 1-800-FOR-VOTE hotline to request a voter application.
- You can download a PDF version of the New York State Voter Registration Form.
Print the form, complete and sign it, and mail it to your NYS county board of elections.
Alternately, you can complete a PDF version of the New York State Voter Registration Form on-line by clicking on the link below, typing the necessary information and selecting the appropriate boxes. However, the file size of these forms are substantially larger than the above forms, so it may take quite a while for them to load on computers with slower Internet connections.
Once the form is completed, you need to print the form and sign it. Then, mail the form to your NYS county board of elections.

Why does the College get involved in voter registration?
The 1998 reauthorization of the federal Higher Education Act includes a requirement that higher education institutions make a “good faith effort” to make mail voter registration forms available to all enrolled students. This federal legislation supports the campus’ long-standing goals of engendering leadership and citizenship among the student body.
Updates to law in the HEOA: The Higher Ed Amendments of 2008 added the following text to the Voter Registration Act effective August 14, 2008.
(D) The institution shall be considered in compliance with the requirements of subparagraph (A) for each student to whom the institution electronically transmits a message containing a voter registration form acceptable for use in the State in which the institution is located, or an Internet address where such a form can be downloaded, if such information is in an electronic message devoted exclusively to voter registration.
Am I eligible to register to vote in New York State?
In order to register to vote, you must be a citizen of the United States, have lived in New York at the address you are registering at for at least 30 days prior to the election, not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction, be at least 18 years of age at the time of the next election, and not claim the right to vote elsewhere. Residents of other states are eligible to register in their home state.
As a college student living away from home, where should I register?
You may register to vote either at your college address or at your permanent address. If you register at your permanent address and want to vote while attending college, you must remember to request an absentee ballot approximately 30 days before the election. Check with your state election board for the exact deadline.
I live in on-campus housing and have a box number. What is the correct way to complete the registration form?
Students living in a residence hall should use their room / apartment/suite number and the name of their residence hall as their residence address. The box number is considered your mailing address.
I registered to vote at my permanent address. How do I vote while I’m away at college?
If you are registered at your permanent address and wish to request an absentee ballot to vote in your permanent home address’s district in New York, please see the NYS Board of Elections Absentee Ballot page: New York State Board of Elections Absentee Ballot.If you live outside of New York State, you must contact your local board of elections.
